Privacy online and icons
This workshop looks at online privacy and how icons can educate young people. Last year we collected thousands of children’s drawings, cartoons and icons that illustrate important points from Privacy Policies. The icons are designed to help protect your personal information when you are on the internet. Drawings have been selected and we want to hear your views on whether these particular icons deliver the right message.
What are Privacy Policies?
A Privacy Policy sets out how a company uses and protects any information that you give them when you use or visit their website. Every website should have a Privacy Policy. If a company asks you to provide certain information by which you can be identified when using their website, then you must check how they want to use your personal information. You can normally find this information in the website Privacy Policy. You have the right to know that what they are doing with your information. You also have the right to make sure that the company will only use your personal information as mentioned in their Privacy Policy.
Be careful…! The company may change their Privacy Policy from time to time, so check their page often to ensure that you are happy with any changes.
Why are Privacy Policies important to me?
Privacy Policies are important to you, because you need to know what a company does with your personal information. It is important that you understand what your rights are. For example: whenever you are asked to fill in a form on a website, look for the box that you can tick or un-tick to show that you do not want the information to be used by anybody else for advertising products to you. By controlling where and how your personal information is used you are protecting your reputation and looking after your future image.
This workshop should take about 15 minutes to complete
